POSITION DESCRIPTIONExecutive DirectorReports to Executive CommitteeLocation: New York CityHours: 40 hours/weekExemptStart Date: ASAP ABOUT NYUJ New Yorkers United for Justice (NYUJ) is a coalition of diverse national and state-based nonprofit organizations engaged in New York to promote urgent and fundamental criminal justice reform in the Empire State. NYUJ supports bold action by all branches of government to fix a deeply flawed criminal justice system that punishes the poor and communities of color, tears families apart, and makes New Yorkers less safe. NYUJ believes that New Yorks criminal justice system must ensure that equal access to justice for anyone accused in New York State is neither denied nor limited on the bases of age, race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin or religion. NYUJ is committed to building the necessary advocacy infrastructure to support and supplement New York- based community and advocacy organizations that share this vision of reform. NYUJ is fiscally sponsored by the Dream Corps. NYUJ OVERVIEW In less than one year, NYUJ has had a significant impact in the fight for criminal justice reform in New York. NYUJs highly effective public engagement in support of the key reforms enacted earlier this year clearly made a difference. And the extensive research and polling NYUJ has conducted in the past few weeks provides a great foundation for further progress. In the coming year and beyond, there is much more work to be done to fix the broken system. To facilitate these efforts, the NYUJ Executive Committee has created the Executive Director position to enhance its talented team so that the coalition can more comprehensively address a reform agenda and have an even bigger impact in 2020 and beyond. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES The Executive Director will oversee the operations of NYUJ. MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING:Manage, prioritize, ensure execution, and facilitate decision-making regarding the work of the CoalitionCoordinate all meetings, events, associated preparation of materials and necessary follow-up and ensure that all Coalition members are fully engagedSupervise staff, consulting relationships and NYC office spaceADVOCACY:Ensure development and execution of all advocacy strategiesCollaborate with staff and consultants to represent NYUJ and advance its priorities with aligned organizations, key constituencies, and elected officialsCOMMUNICATIONS:Work with communications consultants to ensure booking of various tv, print and radio mediaWork with consultants to promote and develop NYUJ brand and imageFUNDRAISING:Work with Coalition and philanthropic partners to schedule high-level fundraising meetings and events and some celebrity outreach coordination OPERATIONS, HUMAN RESOURCES, AND FINANCES:Participate in fundraising, staff and Senior team meetingsFacilitate approvals for expenditures and agreements and ensure employee compliance with legal, financial and other requirementsAct as primary liaison to the fiscal sponsor, helping to prepare budgets, forecast revenue, track expenses and negotiate contracts A successful candidate will be highly organized and detail-oriented, flexible, able to adapt in a fast-paced environment, and sociable.
