General Description

*Hiring range is $55,992.81 to $64,391.73.
Performs supervision to Adoptions and Foster Care social workers. Works with agency administration in identifying and securing available resources to meet the needs of the targeted population.

An employee in this class supervises a staff of social workers, who are responsible for providing direct and/or indirect services to clients. The employee is responsible for assigning cases to subordinates, coordinating work flow operations, and supervising staff through case review and consultation, which requires the provision of substantial and recurring technical direction. The employee is responsible for staff training, resolving problems and ensuring that quality services are provided. The employee may provide input to higher level management on administrative, personnel, and budget issues. This position reports to the agency program manager and is evaluated through conferences, results of work, reports, and public feedback.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews program objectives and service delivery needs with staff and formulates specific goals and objectives for the assigned program area. Employees provide input to higher-level management on short-range planning needs for staff or unit.
  • Assigns cases to staff and maintains workload balance. Makes changes in work procedures to meet program demands and present recommendations to management on issues which impact on programmatic goals, objectives and policies.
  • Provides on-the-job training for staff and makes arrangements for staff to receive formal training when offered.
  • Ensures policies, rules and regulations are followed. Explains and implements changes when necessary.
  • Monitors the work of subordinate staff through case reviews, progress reports, conferences and informal discussions to assure compliance with operational standards and established policies.
  • Discusses disciplinary problems with staff and issues initial oral warnings for disciplinary action.
  • Interviews applicants for positions supervised and make recommendations to higher level management on hiring decisions. Participates in subordinates' performance evaluation and approves leave requests.

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision and training.
  • Considerable knowledge of social work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems.
  • Considerable knowledge of behavioral and socioeconomic problems and their treatment and governmental and private organizations and community resources.
  • Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies which govern social work programs.
  • Ability to supervise, train, or orient lower-level social workers, students, interns or other staff.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
  • This position serves as one of seven supervisors who will provide after-hour Child Protective Services supervision on a rotational basis.

  • EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: Master's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a master's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
