Patient Care Technician - Hematology Oncology Unit (Rochester)

Hematology/Oncology Care Unit includes the inpatient and the outpatient Hematology, Oncology and Blood and Marrow Transplant patients. The 32-bed inpatient unit admits children of all ages with hematological and/or oncology, and blood and marrow transplant inpatient clinical needs. They work closely with the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders Clinic and Infusion clinic to meet patients needs.

Significant populations include:

Newly diagnosed oncology diseases (leukemia/lymphoma, solid tumors, neuro oncology)


Sickle cell disease

Pain crisis in hemoglobinopathy



Anemia/blood disorders

Acute chest syndrome/pneumonia


Blood and marrow and hematopoectic stem cell transplantation

In collaboration with the multidisciplinary health care delivery team, the Patient Care Technician, under the direction of the Registered Nurse perform basic nursing care activities, assist in maintaining a safe, clean, stocked patient care setting, assist staff members and help direct patient flow .

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED

Minimum Work Experience
1 year

Specific Requirements and Preferences
Experience in a health care setting if possible pediatrics; Certified Nursing Assistant or EMT. (Preferred)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Basic computer skills (typing, use of mouse, e-mail).
Knowledge of aseptic technique.
Basic calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Human relations and interpersonal skills.

Functional Accountabilities

Patient Services - Admission
1. Include but not limited to-orienting family to use of call lights, monitor and unit.
2. Set up of monitor and alarms.
3. Perform vital signs, height, weight and head circumference.

Patient Services - Daily Living
1. Patient ADLs include but not limited to daily bath, skin care with mouth care and peri-care.
2. Ensure proper nutrition as ordered (ng, gt, or tray).
3. Care of tube feeding and feeding of patients.
4. Application of skin creams as directed by RN.
5. Collection of cultures, urine and stool samples, etc.

Direct Patient Care
1. Recognize and report pain and skin breakdown.
2. Prioritize tasks and special requests from RN.
3. Assist in performance of trach care and EVDs.
4. Assist with central line dressing, pin care, cast and traction care and care for dying patients.
5. Assist with preparation of room for discharge and admission; assist with patient flow by maintaining a neat and orderly environment.
6. Obtain equipment and supplies and maintain PAR levels.

Monitor Surveillance
1. Observe and alert RN when there are monitor deviations
2. When assigned to monitor bank will follow the monitor guidelines to dress code and professionalism.

Infection Control
1. Care for isolation patients.
2. Adherence to hand washing before and after every patient.
3. Clean equipment after each patients use.

1. Document on nursing database, flow sheets and vital signs in a timely manner and notify appropriate charge nurse in computer or chart as suitable.

Communication/ Professionalism
1. Communicate effectively with RN and team members to achieve goals by reporting any changes, abnormal findings, and participate in beginning and end of shift reporting.
2. Maintain professional relationships with patients and families.
3. Resolve conflict with co-workers appropriately.
4. Support a family-centered care environment.
5. Communicate with RN on all patient care activities at least every hour; notify charge nurse when leaving and returning to the unit for any reason.
6. Demonstrate non-judgmental behavior.

2. Participate in shared decision making through contributing to unit discussion and support shared leadership decisions.

1. Unit communications associate follows all Hospital / Departmental policies/procedures.
2. Remain on unit during assigned shift, notify Charge Nurse and appropriate staff members when leaving the unit for patient care related errands; leave patient care area only when assigned shift is completed, replacement staff member is present, and report is given.
3. Use designated staff areas for eating, smoking, and socializing (perform only during assigned breaks).
4. Work area is left in a neat and organized fashion.
5. Use downtime productively during shift.
6. Attend mandatory in-service/educational programs to learn about new procedures, skills, products, equipment; attend staff meetings.
