We are seeking a Behavior Specialist Coordinator (Level 1 BIS) to help effectively support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the New York State regional office of Syracuse. The ideal candidate will have experience designing individualized behavior intervention support plans, using functional behavior assessment tools and designing and using appropriate methods of data collection via Community Options electronic medical records platform.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Supports and encourages people to increase his/her ability to problem solve, be in control of life situations, and to be as independent as possible.
  • Meets with interdisciplinary team on a regular basis, either in the persons home, the community or an office setting.
  • Provide on-going support for integration efforts.
  • Documents persons progress and assesses interventions and collaborative services.
  • Conducts data collection, writes functional behavioral assessments and behavior support plans per OPWDD regulations.
  • Conducts and documents staff training on how to implement person-centered behavioral management plans including SCIP-R techniques, required documentation and behavior guidelines.
  • Assists in building a support network between the person, medical practitioners, family members, and the community.
  • Provides counseling supports in either individual or group settings.
  • Participates in Circle(s) of Support for personal future planning.
  • Provides on-going support for integration efforts.
  • Provides crisis management services as necessary.
  • Participates as an active member in the Community Options Human Rights Committee, Incident Review Committee and the New York State Behavior Support Team.
  • Provides supervisory support and professional guidance to Regional Behavior Aides (x3).
  • Other duties as assigned by the New York State Quality Assurance and Compliance Director.
  • Knowledge/Skills Required:

  • Masters Degree in Behavior Analysis with a BCBA, OR Masters Degree in Psychology, Social Work, School Psychology, or Apply Psychology and document training in assessment techniques and behavior support plan development, ORNYS License in mental health counseling
  • Minimum 5 years experience working directly with people with developmental disabilities, including the development, implementation, and monitoring of behavior support plans and/or providing supervision and training to others in the implementation of behavior support plans.
  • Knowledge of community resources.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must maintain certification in OPWDDs Strategies for Crisis Intervention/Prevention (SCIP-R) and CPR/First Aid.
  • Ability to establish a comfortable and supportive relationship with a person receiving support.
  • Valid NYS drivers license OR comfortability using the public transportation system.
  • Working Conditions:

  • While performing the duties of the job, employee may be required to travel to various regional offices and/or residential group homes, and is exposed to changing weather conditions.
  • Flexible schedule as determined by needs of the people supported and the supervisor.
  • Must be able to accommodate a flexible schedule, which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Work will take place in community and residential settings.
