Manager, Production and Materials Planning

Position Summary

The Production and Materials Planning Manager is responsible for leading the production planning and materials, internal logistics, receiving and shipping groups to effectively create and maintain an efficient production schedule that meets customer requirements while level loading and maximizing production efficiency and effectively utilizing inventory.

Job Duties

  • Establishes departmental goals and objectives which support both internal and external customer requirements.
  • Maintains procedures and compliance for all production material internal logistics from receipt of inventory through the shipment of final product.
  • Understands advanced lean six sigma principles including Kanban and Flow and uses them to effectively drive continuous improvement efforts to foster a culture focused on efficiency and reduction of waste.
  • Analyzes production requirements based on sales orders and short/medium term forecasts considering production resources (people, materials, equipment).
  • Analyzes and reports on weekly and monthly metrics related, including but not limited to, OTD (On Time Delivery), Planned Production, Past Due, Inventory Accuracy.
  • Works with operations management team to determine the most cost-efficient scheduling and utilization of production resources for on-time delivery and minimization of overall cost.
  • Manages and monitors performance in relation to established strategic and annual goals (strategic, quality, delivery, cost) for all departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and drive corrective actions utilizing Root Cause Counter Measure (RCCM) methodologies without subrogating the intent of the goals.
  • Stays abreast of supply chain best practices and technology as they relate to production planning and scheduling and inventory control.
  • Recommends and leads implementation of solutions to improve the planning and scheduling processes.
  • Provides consistent and timely feedback to employees regarding their performance.
  • Leads the establishment of plans for the initial set-up and on-going maintenance of master data for purchased parts, manufactured sub-assemblies, end items, and other parts/components/internal and external processes.
  • Spearheads the development of the capacity management process, including identification of capacity gaps and/or bottlenecks to ensure successful execution of customer demands in support of S&OP.
  • Establishes and monitors raw material inventory levels to support production schedules and pull signals. Develops and implements strategies to support inventory optimization.
  • Manages supplier release requirements to ensure an uninterrupted supply of raw materials to meet production requirements. Escalates on-going supplier delivery scorecards and issues to Procurement Manager, Supplier Quality Manager and appropriate Commodity Manager(s).
  • Establishes procedures to ensure the proper identification and physical control of all inventories; including raw, in-process, finished, non-conforming and scrap materials.
  • Assists in new product launches to ensure a proper flow of material for machine try-out, ramp-up and full production.
  • Assists in the reconciliation of cycle counting variances and root cause/resolution of inventory discrepancies.
  • Works closely with other department heads to look for ways to continuously improve operations to maximize profits while lowering costs.
  • Reviews the implication of Master Production Schedule changes on the facility's storage space, parts flow, inventories, and Receiving and Shipping capabilities.
  • Analyzes new bid opportunities with concurrent contractual obligations in conjunction with staff to determine capacity impact and to establish the most efficient levels of production.

Educational Requirements

Bachelors Degree in Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Engineering discipline or a closely related discipline is required. MBA desirable.

Experience Requirements

Five years production planning, scheduling, and material control experience in a leadership role in an integrated supply chain organization is required. Supply Chain Management experience in DoD environment is preferred.

  • Extensive knowledge of Bill of Manufacturing/Materials structures and routings.
  • Knowledge of Production and Purchasing functions in a Manufacturing Environment.
  • Leadership skills to build and maintain a team-oriented environment while leveraging lean methodologies of Kanban and Flow.
  • Adaptability to changes in the work environment.
  • Strategic thinking with a lean manufacturing focus.
  • Successful track record of talent development.
  • Firm understanding of bills of material, lead time management, pegging, utilization, efficiency, rated capacity, demonstrated capacity, bottleneck mitigations, critical resource identification and management, economic order quantities, dependent vs. independent demand, capacity requirements planning, ERP / MRP systems, supplier relationships, and VMI.
