Job Purpose

To provide technical expertise and support from an engineering perspective to ensure effective National Grid operations.

Senior Protection Engineers perform a wide range of duties including network fault and protection coordination studies, relay setting development and protection reviews to provide complex system protection designs for small-and large-scale projects. This to ensure effective system operation and support for other National Grid business units with appropriate technical expertise to meet local needs. They may also contribute to complex disturbance investigations in order to recommend corrective action or to prevent recurring problems. May also contribute to development of protection policy, support regulatory audit activities and participate on protection industry committees. Mentoring is utilized as a key aspect of professional development and job performance.

Key Accountabilities
  • Independently collate and analyze data using ASPEN OneLiner, WaveWin, symmetrical components, and manufacturer equipment software in order to support the departments decision-making process and capital construction program.
  • Execute instructions and requests, plan and organize resources and make appropriate arrangements to ensure that work is carried out efficiently and in line with relevant policies and processes.
  • Provide protection design and perform coordination and short circuit engineering studies, analysis and disturbance investigations, under supervision, in order to recommend corrective action in problem areas, or to prevent problems
  • Test and challenge existing procedures and highlight areas for improvement in order to ensure they are robust.
  • Develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders in order to obtain and share information that will benefit National Grid.
  • Undertake specific tasks of varying complexity in order to support colleagues in the design of technical solutions.
  • Build upon technical/professional skills within own area of specialism or of other processes in order to continually grow your personal contribution to the business.
  • Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required
  • Able to lead and supervise a project team or virtual teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited engineering program. Emphasis in electric power is a plus.
  • 6 years work experience is ideal (Master's degree considered equivalent to 1 yr. work experience).
  • Good working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes.
  • Proficient MS Office computer skills (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Ability to physically navigate in and around an electrical substation.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Proven interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) is preferred. Professional Engineers (PE) License (NY) is ideal
  • A valid drivers license required with a safe driving history that meets National Grids Safe Driver policy.
