Assistant Professor, FILM
Employment Type: Full-Time
The Department of Transmedia within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Film beginning Fall 2020. We are seeking a filmmaker to join our well-established and respected film program offering both BFA and MFA degrees in Film. Our film program promotes an independent and artistic filmmaker ethos. We are therefore looking for someone who is fully informed about all aspects of film production, but given current faculty strengths we are particularly interested in someone who is strong in two or more of the following areas: fiction, cinematography, sound design, editing and post-production, emerging and hybrid modes, and film studies. However, ultimately and above all else, we seek an exceptional artist - a filmmaker making interesting and thought-provoking work, regardless of their filmmaking area/mode.
This faculty member will bring production expertise and help design new courses based on their own research and practice, as well as teaching courses based on our programmatic and curricular needs. We look forward to our new faculty member sharing their unique vision with the program and department. For service, the faculty member will participate in committees in the department, college, and/or university and help with student advising, student learning outcomes and assessment, and community engagement. The Department of Transmedia is a major academic center for the education of media arts professionals. Our programs offer students rewarding studio experiences in well-equipped facilities, simultaneously integrated with rigorous academic studies and challenging curricula in media arts history as well as comprehensive and diverse theory and contemporary issue courses. The Transmedia department comprises four BFA and four MFA programs in Art Photography, Art Video, Computer Art and Animation, and Film, with 16 full-time faculty and approximately 300 undergraduate and 30 graduate students. Individuals whose experience, training, and professional practice will enhance the department's and college's commitment to diversity and inclusion are particularly encouraged to apply.
