HoursStandard University business hours8:30am 5:00pm (academic year)8:00am 4:30pm (summer)Hours may vary based on operational needs.Job DescriptionThe Communications Specialist is the primary writer and media contact for the College of Arts and Sciences Office of Communications. Position demands a seasoned, prolific and flexible writer who can deftly switch tone, length and style of writing to suit various content needs, including for multiple monthly e-newsletters, thecollege.syr.edu website, interviews, news stories, announcements, speaking points, and more. Excellent editing and proofreading skills are a must, as is a keen sense for how to pitch stories (via Division of Marketing and Communications) to make them attractive to media outlets. Timeliness (both in hitting deadlines and responding to media inquiries) is crucial, as is strong emotional intelligence and the ability to manage expectations with a firm but ever-pleasant manner.Position works closely with the director of communications and content marketing manager to ensure mutual alignment with institutional messages, themes and priorities. Position also interacts daily with SU News Services and other offices in SUs Division of Marketing and Communications to help promote the work and achievements of the College.QualificationsBachelors degree and a minimum of seven years of professional writing experience required, preferably in an academic environment.Degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing or a closely related field desired.Familiarity with mass email/e-newsletter creation and dissemination, website content management systems, and other digital communication tools/platforms is required.Familiarity with AP Style is highly desired. Familiarity with the Syracuse University style guide a plus.Job Specific QualificationsExperience collaborating directly with faculty, students, staff and alumni.Extensive recent experience researching, writing, and editing of communications content in a higher education institution, public relations agency or closely related field, with the specific goal to instill pride and drive action/interaction.Values critical thinking, is open to change/evolution, and enjoys working in a close team environment.Proven research and writing skills under pressure and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.Understands contemporary brand stewardship and content marketing principles. Works to bring the brand to life through storytelling and writing.Must be calm under pressure and able to juggle myriad assignments with flexibility and good humor.Requires the ability to tactfully/diplomatically manage a range of personalities, plus a strong sense of judgement, discretion, and confidentiality.ResponsibilitiesAs part of a greater content strategy and working to tight deadlinesidentifies, writes, edits and posts relevant, valuable articles and news stories.Produces, writes, edits and provides quality control for email blasts to A&S target audiences; measures efficacy and adjusts content strategy as needed.Assists with the creation, project management, and quality assurance of print and digital marketing collateral; works closely with social/digital strategist to ensure that efforts are amplified across various A&S and University channels.
