Yale Library seeks an energetic professional to fill a critical leadership and management position with policy development, customer service, outreach, and public space responsibilities. The Director of Yale Library Access Services and Bass Library is responsible for setting priorities in support of the universitys teaching and research mission and overseeing all administrative aspects of Bass Library, including management of public services, collection development, personnel management, information technology, and facilities planning. The positions space ownership and programmatic leadership responsibilities extend beyond the Bass Library to include high-use public spaces and collections located in the Sterling Memorial Library. Responsible for leading policy development and shaping the strategic direction for circulation, reserves, and resource sharing across the Yale Library system. The position requires leadership, innovation, and diplomatic skill in the development, maintenance, and assessment of activities connecting users to collections and services through physical and virtual points of contact. Directs, mentors, and leads development and management of a diverse staff that includes three direct reports, 19 staff members, and a large team of student assistants in the provision of high-quality services, including robust undergraduate support and seamless referrals to other research support librarians and service providers. Collaborates on behalf of the Yale Library on access service matters through external library partnerships and initiatives, such as the Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation. Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Scholarly Resources, the Director of Yale Library Access Services and Bass Library will work with colleagues across Yale Library to provide high-quality, consistent access and research support services and welcoming, functional spaces in the Bass and Sterling Memorial Libraries for the Yale University community.
Access services leadership & communications across Yale Library:1. Lead and drive development, adoption, and ongoing revision of system-wide practices, guidelines, and policies related to access services with a focus on exceptional service and user experience. Specific service areas include circulation, reserves, privileges, user services, information desks, use of library spaces, use of materials, and resource sharing (which includes interlibrary loan borrowing and lending, consortial borrowing and lending, and document delivery services).2. Ensure communication and group planning among Yale Library access services providers.3. Develop and maintain collaborative, productive working relationships with colleagues in Yale Library access services units.4. Represent Yale Library and develop policy proposals on behalf of the library through peer networks and collaborative initiatives related to access services and resource sharing. 5. Analyzes, evaluates, and set priorities for the effective use of services, collections, and funds.Director of Bass Library: 6. Effectively direct, mentor, and lead a diverse, highly-skilled staff, and provide administrative oversight with the managerial tasks of recruitment, hiring, retention, and evaluation.7. Ensure excellent customer service, including assessment of existing services and development of new service offerings based on evolving user needs, and with an expectation of decision-making informed by qualitative and quantitative data. 8. Ensure outstanding outreach and student engagement programs that integrate seamlessly with research support librarians and other library staff across Yale Library.9. Exercise programmatic leadership as a space owner and representative for the user experience for the Bass Library, and for selected spaces in Sterling Memorial Library that include the Linonia and Brothers (L&B) Reading Room, Microform Reading Room, Periodical Reading Room, Starr Main Reference Room, Wright Reading Room, Sterling Memorial Library book stack tower, and public service points in the Sterling Memorial Library nave. Lead the development of a cohesive vision for these spaces, and coordinate on collection, preservation, program, research support, security, facilities, and information technology matters in these spaces with relevant library and university colleagues, where appropriate.
Required Education and Experience
Masters degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited library school or a post-graduate degree in a related field. Minimum of eight years of experience, three of which should be in a leadership role in an academic or public library, or similar institution.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Ability to manage access services functions (circulation, resource sharing/document delivery/interlibrary loan, reserves) and the integrated library systems and technologies that support them.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to manage library programs and initiatives focused on undergraduate student support. Strong user centered public service philosophy.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Strong managerial ability that demonstrates strategic thinking, change management, supervising, motivating and leading teams of library staff.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across organizational units.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Demonstrated ability in designing projects and bringing them to a conclusion in a timely fashion. Demonstrated ability working collaboratively and independently with varied groups within a complex organization and rapidly changing, team environment.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:Excellent knowledge of current issues and opportunities in enhancing access to library collections and services. Familiarity with assessment and evaluation methods; creative, innovative, and motivated to engage in ongoing assessment of services. Experience in a labor union environment.
